(1) There seem to be more and more people drinking alcohol now a days compared to before. The definition of binge drinking according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is, “a pattern of drinking that brings blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels to 0.08 g/dL. Also on the NIAAA link, the definition from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (which conducts the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health) is, “Drinking 5 or more alcoholic drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days.” Growing up in Kentucky where a lot of my friends and I were drinking in middle school, I find the definition from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as a better definition for it does not make me feel as much as an alcoholic. Binge drinking can be a problem if it is not controlled due to the mind altering effects of alcohol on the mind. According to the essay, “Binge drinking on campus,” (Rubin, S. (1998, 11). Binge drinking, a campus killer. (Reader’s Digest, 153, 74-81) drinking on college campus is a growing problem.

(2) Binge drinking is becoming a reality that many families are having to deal with more and more in today’s society. More college kids are partaking in binge drinking and this can mean that they are susceptible to many types of health concerns, and in many cases binge drinking can eventually lead to alcoholism. In an article in, “The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Health” (2008) The National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as “a pattern of drinking alcohol that brings blood alcohol content to 0.08% or above” (p.137). Growing up in a college town such as Tallahassee, Florida where one of the highest rated “party schools” in the nation is (Florida State University) and I have seen too many times to count a college student too drunk to walk themselves a few blocks back home and the serious hangovers that comes along with binge drinking the night before, sometimes even throughout the whole next day! In my experience I have found that the people most likely binge drink are younger adults and people who are trying to be a part of the crowd. In most cases it would seem to me that people binge drink to mask their feelings and/or get the euphoric sensations that come from getting drunk. I do not feel that binge drinking is just a phase in life, I feel that it deserves a great deal of critical attention because if the issue is not dealt with before it becomes a problem. With the fact that binge drinking can lead to many other problems I feel like if the issue is left unattended it can blossom into a full fledged personal pandemic in many cases. Student bodies as well as schools setting up treatments, support groups, and some sort of reward program may be worth getting started on a nation wide scale. I know that I would feel better if my children had those resources available to them once they hit the age that they are having to deal with these types of issues.
