This course begins with a consideration of what democracy means including consideration of different understandings of the values of liberty, equality and the scope of activity to which the principles of democracy should be applied. Relying primarily on the Hudson material read for the first week of classes, explain the different ways that democracy can be understood. Include in that explanation how the different models of democracy incorporate the values of liberty and equality. Finally, offer your judgement, supported to the greatest extent possible with examples or illustrations, how each model might or might not characterize our current political system. I.E. offer commentary as to why each of Hudson’s four models either does or does not correspond to current U.S. politics.
