Leaders absolutely need to lead by example and that is the opposite of what Malcolm did here. He showed no regard for what his team was saying and like you said above, the team had some pretty good alternatives. He was clearly only concerned with his position and what the board wanted to have done that he did not want to consider any other option. With what seems to be someone with a high level of experience in the issue at hand, he did not want to consult her at all. The meeting would have went a completely different way had he showed a level of empathy and regard for what his clearly passionate team had to say. That is an excellent point there.
