This assignment is intended to help you understand and apply challenging biblical teaching on wealth, poverty, and the use of money in the Bible.
Note that you will have the opportunity to reflect and write further on these issues in the Benchmark – Church and Politics Essay assignment that is due in Topic 7. Developing your thoughts carefully here can help you in writing the future assignment.
Each of your responses should be between 200-250 words and should include at least three biblical references and any additional references when answering the questions for this assignment.
- Read the story of the rich man in Matthew 19:16-30. Is Jesus teaching salvation by works? What is the point of Jesus’ teaching and how can you apply it today in your own life?
- Read James 2:1-7 and 5:1-7. Do you believe that James is teaching that it is immoral to be wealthy? Why or why not? How can Christians apply James’ teaching today?
- Read 1 Timothy 6:3-10 and 6:17-19. How does Paul in these passages provide a balanced perspective on material wealth?
- Read 2 Corinthians 8-9 and from it describe how Paul views the Christian practice of giving to those in need. You may wish to focus on the extent to which Christians are expected to give, or the motivation to give, for example.
