I chose to talk about Rubens painting called ‘The Arrival and Reception of Marie de’ Medici at Marseilles’. This painting was very fasinating to me out of the two because of how different this painting was compared to most artists or other paintings I have seen. Ruben really took a different approach when creating the “nymphs” for this painting. Instead of doing an ideal pleasing to the eye look of a woman, Ruben chose to paint heavy set women which I thought was really cool. “His nudes, which often startle contemporary viewers because we have developed almost entirely different standards of beauty, are notable for the way in which their flesh folds and drapes across their bodies. Their beauty rests in the sensuality of this flesh, which in some measure symbolizes the sensual life of self-indulgence and excess” (Sayre, 2013). Another cool thing Ruben did with this painting was creat balance throughout the “chaos” of the painting. With all of the things that were going on in the painting like Queen Marie, Neptune, the ship, the nymphs and all other aspects that were pretty random somehow flew really well together. Ruben was able to make it so each aspect of the painting balanced together. It all together is a very well planned and beautiful piece.
