Distribution Center

A distribution center is a specialized building, often with air conditioning or refrigeration, which is kept with goods to be redistributed to wholesalers, retailers or directly to consumers. A distribution center is the order processing element, a principal part, of the complete order fulfillment process. Distribution centers are usually seen as being result and demand given. Some may call the distribution center a warehouse, a fulfilment center, a bulk break center or a DC. Distribution centers are the foundation of a supply network , as they allow a single location to stock a vast number of products. Some organizations operate both retail distribution and direct-to-consumer out of a single facility, sharing space, equipment, labor resources, and inventory as applicable (Wikipedia, 2018).

Public Warehouse

A public ware house is a facility that stores large amount of inventory for various companies. Public warehouse fees can be a combination of storage fees and inbound and outbound transaction fees. The company using the public warehouse does not have to employ warehouse staff seeing that the company can easily transport inventory to and from instead of using technology to manage it (Murray, M, 2018).

Private Fleet vs Common Carrier

A private fleet have become more common recently for large corporations such as Amazon or Walmart. The reasoning of using their own fleet is to have the control and flexibility over the logistics part of the operation. A common carrier, on the contrary, may typically transport goods for any amount of companies. It can be in a form of shipping, trucking or airline. However, either choice is a good option of convenience and be factored by the financial section to the business and the potential threat of overlooked deadlines can affect the business. Amazon for example, has been building up its private carrier capacity since 2014, decreasing its reliance on common carriers (Investopedia, 2018).

As it relates to the amazon video, it seems to me that Amazon can function as a distribution center in that retailers use it as their order process for the online or e-commerce businesses. Using the common carrier is a huge part of Amazon operation based on the observation on the video and well as my experience using their services. The amazon packages that I usually receive comes in a box, dropped of by a member of FedEx, in a truck own by FedEx.

Apple uses public warehouses. UPS and FedEx logistics companies are where most Apple products are stored as mentioned in the video (Jigsaw Academy, 2015). Many apple devices are shipped from China manufacturers to our doors or local store, if purchased online.

Subway seems to take the distribution center function based on the video (“YNS Your Success Now”, 2013). They ensure that their products are available at all times due to the fact that timing can either break or make their business. They also use the common carrier, based on my observation on the video, a subway trailer is being driven by a truck with a Sysco label.

A distribution center is a building that is used to store products that get delivered to many different places, when the product is needed. They are redistributed to retailers, wholesalers, or sometimes even directly to the consumer. It is one part of the entire order fulfillment process. Amazon is considered a distribution center, and it is a massive operation. A lot of retailers use Amazon to process their orders. Most of these retailers are online business.

A common carrier is a person or a company that transports products on regular routes. They usually have set rates based on distances and size of the packages. Some examples of common carriers are FedEx, UPS, and the Postal Service. The common carrier is also a big part of the Amazon massive distribution process, being as this is how the package gets to the buyer. Every time I receive an amazon package it usually comes by my postal service, unless it is very large or heavy.

A private fleet is known as a private carrier. This is usually when a company owns the vehicles that are used to transport its products to places. These are not your normal carriers like UPS and FedEx, these are the semi-trucks that you see on the road. I see a lot for Food Lion, Walmart, and big retailers like that. A lot of people prefer this because they know the carrier is only transporting their good, and it saves a lot of risks. There has been news that Amazon is planning its own private fleet of delivery trucks, such as the ones for Amazon Fresh. Amazon believes that it would be able to deliver items faster and cheaper than the common carrier.

Deadheading is when you see an empty semi-trailer. Drivers are “deadheading” when they are driving a semi-truck pulling an empty trailer, containing no cargo. When you return the empty trailer to your destination, you are deadheading. A lot of companies undergo this because after delivering a load, you probably will not be picking another one up from the same location. This makes the truck run empty until it gets the next load. When a load is dropped off at subway, that truck is going to be deadheading until it gets to its next load. In the video showing the Story of an IPhone, you see a truck dropping a load off at the warehouse, for UPS or FedEx to pick up. When that truck leaves the warehouse, it is leaving empty.
