Human service professionals can address domestic violence by promoting social cohesion (Schofield et al., 2018). Social cohesion refers to unity and harmony among all the people in a family setting. Like in the case of Rick, a human service professional will want to unite Rick’s father with his mother and with Rick to have a situation where all will live harmoniously. This way, respect, trust, and love will prevail, and domestic violence and abuse will decrease. The same way, by creating cohesion between Rick and his wife, a mutual understanding between the two will arise. According to Martin (2014), human service professionals should teach parents to take responsibilities to impart values and mentor their children to grow up and become responsible people. They should also teach them the need to become respectful members of society. This way, the cycle of abuse will be broken. To address the issue of alcoholism, human services professionals should seek ways to reduce the number of alcohol outlets within that region. This strategy will encompass using regulatory authority to limit alcohol outlet density (Schofield et al., 2018). This can be done through zoning and licensing to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and the effects that come with this behavior. These two strategies, fostering social cohesion and limiting the density of alcohol vendors will help address dysfunctional behaviors and break the cycle of abuse.
