1*.Each student is required to respond to this short answer question.

Compare and contrast the Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) and Ecological (ECO) theoretical models.Describe in your own words the purpose and explain using multiple examples how each of the models can be used to describe successful aging.

RESPONSE:

SOC is established on the presumption that people take part in adjustment through their lives. They are equipped for learning and evolving. Through improvement, people experience increases and misfortunes. As more established adulthood comes, misfortunes may dwarf gains. Stems from life expectancy formative point of view. ECO depends on the possibility that the connection between an individual and his or her environment results in some dimension of adjustment.

CHAPTER 4:

2. Sensation is simple stimulation of one of five sense organs and, perception is the mental representation resulting from the interpretation of a sensation.Sensory organs need a certain intensity of stimulations before they will register the presence of a signal (stimulus).Explain what the concepts of sensitivity and threshold are and how these two concepts are related. Additionally, provide a brief describe the age-related changes in each.

RESPONSE:

3. Describe the characteristics of elderspeak and explain how the aspects of elderspeak are likely to be helpful to older adults with a hearing loss and which might not be viewed positively?Relatedly, what is the basic premise of the communication predicament model and what part does patronizing speech play in this model?

RESPONSE:

CHAPTER 5:

4. According to Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) the information processing model conceptualizes memory in views of different levels of stores.Regarding one of these stores, briefly describe what is meant by procedural memory, semantic memory, and episodic memory, and which store are these types memories are found. Additionally, state whether or not age-related differences are typically found in each of these types of memory.

RESPONSE:

5. According to the information-processing model of memory, what are the three stages of processing that take place in long-term episodic memory? What, if any, age-related differences are usually found for each stage? One of these stages is the role of encoding.Briefly describe the relationship between encoding elaboration and production deficiency.

RESPONSE:

CHAPTER 6:

6. Define fluid intelligence (Gf) and crystallized intelligence (Gc) and describe how they differ.Relatedly, WAIS subtests indicate there are classic aging patterns (Botwinick, 1984, p. 179).Provide an explanation as how this relates to fluid and crystallized intelligence.

RESPONSE:

7. What do the disuse hypothesis of cognitive aging (Kausler et al., 2007; Salthouse, 1991) and the engagement hypothesis predict about the course of cognitive decline over the adult life span?To test these predictions, the textbook provide three studies (pp. 185-188). Select one of these studies and analyze the results provided in testing these hypotheses.
