An interaction is when two or more variables interact and have an outcome between the two of them that is greater than the two of them together. This can occur in the medical field especially with medication interactions. If someone takes a “downer” medication with another substance that is a “downer” such as alcohol, this can make someone unconscious. When there are two variables together that become powerful, the interaction then becomes great. Another example is in pregnancy. If a pregnant patient develops pre-eclampsia, they are at risk for a smaller baby due to placental insufficiency. Add the other variable of smoking on top of that, and now the fetus is at a very high risk of being growth restricted. The two variables of pre-eclampsia interacting with smoking have now become greater together for a higher risk pregnancy.
