***Each response needs to be ½ page or more***Respond to two colleagues who chose a different Bowenian concept in analyzing the events, and offer an alternative viewpoint.Colleague 1: Denise:Helen is emotionally attached to her mother and her son Alec. According to Bowen’s theory the family is viewed as an emotional unit. Helen becomes very upset because her son is making ‘bad’ decisions which are in turn affecting her mother, her marriage, and herself. A breakdown in communication began to happen when Alec moved in with his Grandmother. In my opinion Helen viewed Alec as her relief, she no longer needed to stress about her mother, because her son was there to take care of her. When Alec’s behaviors began to come into question, Helen’s world began to crumble and the stresses of taking care of her mother began to creep back into her life.If you apply Bowen’s triangular theory to the Petrakis family you can see the how Helen’s relationship with her mother was deteriorating, because she felt torn between her mother, and her husband. Helen was hoping for some relief by bringing in a third person (Alec) to help spread some of her tension. However, the tension was not relived, it grew even stronger because of the poor choices Alec had made.Colleague 2: JulieBowen’s family theory could be beneficial in treatment in the case of the Petrakis family. Helen Petrakis presents as emotionally distressed and overwhelmed (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2013). Helen appears to be in a fused relationship with several members of her family (Plummer, et al., 2013). She overextends herself to protect the emotional state of all the members of her family. She wants to make her husband happy by taking care of his aged and ailing mother (Plummer, et al., 2013). She wants to make her mother-in-law happy by taking care of her needs (Plummer, et al., 2013). She wants to make her children happy by taking care of all of the things that they do not want to do, like laundry, financial matters, and other things that they are old enough to manage (Plummer, et al., 2013). Helen’s response to all that is involved in this role she has taken on is anxiety (Plummer, et al., 2013). Bowen’s theory suggests that fusion can be demonstrated by an extreme sense of responsibility for the reactions of another family member (Brown, 1999). Fused relationships can be seen in the anxious reactions to perceived demands (Brown, 1999). The person in a fused relationship is typically not able to talk about issues directly with the other person or understand that there are choices available to them (Brown, 1999). Helen is experiencing anxiety as a reaction to the perceived expectation of her husband, John to care for his mother (Plummer, et al., 2013).The second concept that demonstrates the effectiveness of Bowen’s family theory in the case of the Petrakis family is triangles. Helen’s husband, John, and their son, Alec, have been experiencing tension and conflict (Plummer, et al., 2013). Helen withholds information from her husband John because she claims that he will humiliate and hurt Alec (Plummer, et al., 2013). There is a triangle between John, Alec, and Helen. Applying Bowen’s family theory to this case study could involve asking Helen questions that could help her to become aware of her role in the triangles that exist in her family (Brown, 1999).To apply structural family therapy to the Petrakis family case study would involve assessment of the family’s systems. The subsystems, boundaries, functions, relationships, and social supports, of the Petrakis family would need to be explored with structural family therapy (Vetere, 2001). The family member’s communication and interactions would need to be analyzed in using structural family therapy (Vitere, 2001). The social worker would create another system that would help all of the other systems to achieve a balance that would benefit all members of the family. The family theory model that I found to be most helpful for the Petrakis family is the Satir Model. The Iceberg Metaphor is an excellent illustration that can help family members to visualize their internal experience (Banmen, 2002). The Satir Model asserts that coping is the issue that should be addressed, rather than solving a problem (Banmen, 2002). These concepts would be beneficial to implement with Helen Petrakis. Improving Helen’s ability to cope could dramatically reduce the symptoms of anxiety that she has been experiencing. Satir’s Model is more strengths-based as compared to Structural Family Therapy. In structural Family Therapy the therapist is woven into the fabric of the treatment process. The focus is on the systems that are impacting the family. With Satir’s Model, the family themselves are the one’s that are being empowered. This is done through helping them to see that they have the power to make their own choices and that they are responsible for own lives (Banmen, 2002). These concepts are consistent with the strengths-based perspective.ReferencesBanmen, J. (2002). The Satir model: Yesterday and today. Contemporary Family Therapy, 24(1), 7-22.Brown, J. (1999). Politics represents efforts by people in governmental and nongovernmental settings to secure their policy wishes by developing and using power resources.—Bruce S. Jansson, Becoming an Effective Policy Advocate: From Policy Practice to Social Justice (6th ed.)Social workers are in the business of empowering people. They are also often faced with power structures that are entrenched and difficult to navigate. Skillful policy practitioners recognize the many kinds of power resources that exist, thus expanding their options in specific situations. As a social worker, you will learn various strategies that can create and expand personal networks that might be useful in negotiating your policy practice within an agency. You want your power resources to be recognized as effective ways to get things done, not as coercion and force. In this Discussion, you identify various kinds of power resources (including person-to-person, substantive, process, and procedural) that you can use to secure the adoption of a policy proposal. To prepare: Review Chapter 10 in your text, focusing on Jansson’s categorization of types of power resources in the policy-enacting task.Post by Day 3 a description of how social workers use power resources in their social work practice and advocacy. Select a type of power resource you would use in your practice and advocacy. Describe the ethical issues or concerns in using the type of power resource you selected.Be sure to support your post with specific references to this week’s resources. If you are using additional articles, be sure to provide full APA-formatted citations for your references.Respond by Day 5 to a colleague who identified and selected a power resource different from the one you selected. Offer a supportive perspective to his or her choice. Include in your perspective some thoughts on how a social worker can manage the use of his or her power resource.Resources:Rocha, C., Poe, B., & Thomas, V. (2010). Journal: Write in 300-500 words about the following topic. After watching some news and some television shows, including movies and anime. What are some portrayals of sexual harassment and rape myths that are perpetuated by social media, entertainment media, and news outlets? What is the motivation of rapists on TV and in the movies? What “types” of women get raped or sexually assaulted and harassed in movies and television? Some research suggests that on TV and in the movies nontraditional women get raped more often than traditional women as a means of putting nontraditional women “in their place.”How does what you saw compare to the research? How do gender stereotypes perpetuate rape and harassment culture? In your experience or opinion, what are some ways society can address some of these issues around sexual assault and sexual battery, especially on college campuses and workplaces?

A recent difficult decision I have made involves work and family and trying to balance the two. As a public speaker, I was asked to attend a fundraiser and speak at it for the closing ceremony, which I was absolutely interested in doing. However, the dates that were decided fall on my five-year wedding anniversary and my son’s second birthday (they are one right after the other). As someone who is growing her public speaking career, it is important that I am available for as many opportunities as possible and that I get my voice heard. As a wife and mother, my family’s life events also hold high importance to me and considering missing them is painful. My options included going to the event and celebrating my family’s milestones on alternative days or turning down the event and being at home for these milestones on their respective days. Weber and Johnson (2009) discuss how characteristic of the decision maker can affect how they go about making their decision, noting such characteristics as gender, age, cognitive traits/style, age, personality, and health. In discussing gender, they note that women can be more risk-averse and they perceive decisions to be higher risk when they lead to more emotional discomfort (Weber & Johnson, 2009). Weber and Johnson (2009) also note that women’s risk aversion is not biological but instead comes from a place of lower social standing in society, and the belief of perceived risk being larger in all areas except for social risk.As a career focused woman and working mother, I am constantly trying to balance this belief of risk versus reward with decisions that affect my family, and I often find that how I perceive the potential consequences are quite different than how my husband does when we discuss options.Weber and Johnson (2009) further discuss that when making decisions, elements that affect our decisions are the information we have (including internal and external information and information that we must seek), the evaluation of this information through cognitive and affective processes, and our internal state including beliefs, values, goals, and prior experiences (p. 77). Not only would my husband’s internal state be different from mine, but how he evaluates the information provided will also be different, influenced by his gender, upbringing, and so on.As decision making continues to be studied, researchers are becoming more interested in the process of decision making. This has resulted in a better understanding of what can impede decision making. Two common impediments to decision making include heuristics and cognitive biases (Cherry, 2020).Heuristics are judgements based on previously garnered information that allow for quick decisions to be made (Cherry, 2020). Two types of heuristics are representative heuristics (judging the likelihood of an outcome based on a prototype we already have of that outcome) and availability heuristic (judging the likelihood of an event based on how quickly you can pull up other, similar events) (Cherry, 2020).Secondly, cognitive biases can distort decision making (Cherry, 2021). Cognitive biases come in many forms and they are a result of limited attention plus heuristics, or mental shortcuts, and their purpose is to help speed along decision making (Cherry, 2021). Though biases influence decision making, it does not only result in negative influence. Most importantly, one must be well informed about potential biases and their influence over thoughts and decisions. In my situation, I have biases involving both women in the workplace and the negative effect of them taking time for their family, as well as the overrepresentation of women sacrificing for families. To make my decision, I had to sift through the heuristics, cognitive biases and distortions, and try to determine which choice held the best reward for the risk.Reference:Cherry, K. (2020). RESPONSE 1:Respond to at least 2 of your colleagues and elaborate on their recommendations for cultural adaptation with the group they identified. For example, you might discuss a merit or limitation of the cultural adaptation that your colleague proposed. Or you might suggest an alternative application of one of Marsigilia and Booth’s cultural adaptation.Colleague 1: AimeeA tentative meaning of the quote presented by Knight et. al (2014) and how this would specifically inform an intervention recommendation for social work practice with the homeless.“I discovered that my environment had a lot to do with my mental state. So, when I had my own place, I was in control of the environment. You know, there was no drama, everything was nice and mellow, and so I was able to function. Everything was on an even keel; that was fine. It was when other people and situations were introduced into my environment that I couldn’t get away from, that would send me over the edge” (Knight, Lopez, Shumway, Cohen, & Riley, 2014, p. 559).The above mentioned quote provides a tentative meaning of safety in one’s own environment. The individual quoted correlates their physical and mental stability with their environment and recognizes the importance of feeling and being safe. One can abstract from this statement that the housing units allow for mental and physically stability to be gained because of the safety the units provide for them. The single room occupancy hotels (SRO’s) are “trauma-sensitive” and provide a sense of security and safety for the individual (Knight et al., 2014, p. 558). The homeless population struggles with where they will sleep from day to day, staying warm and dry out of the weather, and feeling rested as they do not receive much sleep because they are always on high alert due to their unstable environment. The units provided for the homeless women allows a sense of safety and security within their environment. The statement also represents a control. The individual who made the comment is sharing that she finally feels control over her life where when things that are out of her control can send her “over the edge” (Knight et al., 2014, p. 559). An intervention can be suggested through the use of this statement. The intervention that could be used is how to maintain self-control when outside factors are introduced which make the individual uncomfortable and teach coping skills that the individual could use to de-escalate their feelings.Adapting coping skills which are culturally sensitive and relevant for African Americans and their application for cognitive adaptations.“Culture is fluid and ever-changing, the process of cultural adaptation is complex and dynamic” (Marsiglia & Booth, 2014, p. 423).  Cultural adaptation on the behalf of the social work intervention is important in order to provide culturally diverse intervention to the populations we are serving. Not all cultures will respond the same way to coping mechanisms that are introduced. Understanding the diversity in culture will enable us to provide the most beneficial teaching of coping skills. The Latino population has a history of drug use and abuse which indicates that family-based interventions are culturally relevant as this population is family oriented and utilizes their families as their support system (Marsiglia & Booth, 2014, p. 425). As cited by Marsiglia & Booth, “Culturally grounded social work challenges practitioners to see themselves as the other and to recognize that the responsibility of cultural adaptation resides not solely on the clients but involves everyone in the relationship” (Marsiglia & Kulis, 2009).  Cognitive adaptations need to be considered so we are aware of potential challenges such as language barriers or suggesting coping strategies which may not be relevant to the family (p. 426). This is a reciprocal relationship so we need to understand where the client is and where they want to go moving forward. In order to provide the best service, we need to meet them where they are.ReferencesKnight, K. R., Lopez, A. M., Shumway, M., Cohen, J., & Riley, E. D. (2014). It appears as if she was great in bringing people together, however, there were a lack of confidence in her ability to grow the organization. Nearly, a month after she resigned another director was brought in and her first priorities were to reconfigure the structure of the organization in order to increase efficiency. Resulting in the elimination of two positions.Furthermore, suggest one strategy that might improve the organizational climate and return the organization to optimal functioning. Provide support for your suggested strategy, explaining why it would be effective.According to Lauffer, 2011, pg.323, “we really are looking for someone who knows the community and has proven the ability to build structural relationships between CCFCS and other organizations,” however, the people who were let go from SPG had strong ties with the community. Resulting in loss of trust in the organization. One strategy that might improve the organizational climate and return the organization to optional functioning was to maintain those two positions since they have been with the organization from the beginning. These two employees seemed as if they were very productive and they helped to create a positive work environment both internally and externally. This created a lot of suspicions and the community lost trust in the organization.Social agency management requires the performance of both internal and external coordination responsibilities. Agencies use numerous structural patterns to manage internal relationships and processes and maintain external relations to important people and organizations the organization’s real and potential stakeholders (Lauffer, 2011).Lauffer, A. (2011). Understanding your social agency (3rd ed.). Washington, DC: Sage.Chapter 10, “Agency Structure and Change” (pp. 324–352)Plummer, S.-B., Makris, S., & Brocksen, S. M. (Eds.). (2014b). Social work case studies:     Concentration year. Baltimore, MD: Laureate International Universities Publishing [Vital Source e-reader].“Social Work Supervision, Leadership, and Administration: The Southeast Planning Group” (pp. 85–86)Colleague 2: AngelaPartnership between Southeast Planning Group (SPG) and stakeholdersIn my opinion, the initial partnership between the stakeholders and SPG seemed to be a good relationship and on track with the main concept of combating homelessness and providing resources to the homeless population. The founder established a team who worked well within the community on issues addressing homelessness. Additionally, the founder was well known in the community for their passion to provided resources in an effort to end homelessness. For reason not explained, the Director/Founder resigned in addition to two of the top community organizers being forced out 5 years into the established program. The ChangeAs explained by Plumber et al, when the community and SPG’s partners learned about the changes in leadership, there was suspicion about the new leadership and the direction they wanted to take the organization (Plummer, et al, 2014). A strategy that may improve the organizational climate and return the organization to optimal functioning is providing a vision. Northouse explains an effective leader creates a compelling vision that guide people’s behavior additionally, charismatic leaders create change by linking their vision and its values to the self-concept of followers. (Northouse, 2018, pg. 141). I believe this strategy would be effective because of the uncertainty of the stakeholders, employees and community members. Everyone is nervous about the direction of the company, in order to calm the fears providing a vison seems to be the best avenue. The vision can provide a road map of what the new ownership is envisioning. A lack of vision can affect future funding and established relationships with current partners causing stakeholders and the community to become nervous and have questions about the way forward for the company and the mission they initially signed up to be a part of. This may also bring fears and concerns to the many homeless people they vowed to helped.References:Northouse, P. G. (2018). Introduction to leadership: Concepts and practice (4th ed.). Assignment 2: Process RecordingsA process recording is a written tool used by field education experience students, field instructors, and faculty to examine the dynamics of social work interactions in time. Process recordings can help in developing and refining interviewing and intervention skills. By conceptualizing and organizing ongoing activities with social work clients, you are able to clarify the purpose of interviews and interventions, identify personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, and improve self-awareness. The process recording is also a useful tool in exploring the interpersonal dynamics and values operating between you and the client system through an analysis of filtering the process used in recording a session. For this Assignment, you will submit a process recording of your field education experiences specific to this week.Note: You are submitting a written transcript, not an audio or video recording. The Assignment (2–4 pages):Provide a transcript of what happened during your field education experience, including a dialogue of interaction with a client.Explain your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue, including social work practice theories, and explain how it might relate to diversity or cultural competence covered this week.Describe your reactions and/or any issues related to your interaction with a client during your field education experience.Explain how you applied social work practice skills when performing the activities duringSubmit your AssignmentNote: You should also share your process recordings with your field instructor during your individual supervision.Note: Adherence to confidentiality is required during your process recordings. Do not include real names of clients, supervisors, or social workers with whom you may come into contact during your social work field education experience. Omit any personal identifiers when detailing the interaction with your social work clients.
