According to Deman Media, Inc. (2016), I have learned that VBA is an acronym for Visual Basic for Applications. Visual Basic for Applications is a programming feature designed by Microsoft for use with their Microsoft Office software package. VBA is a tool that can be used to create programs to be run in Excel. VBA allows me to automate Excel tasks and I can do faster and without manual labor. VBA programs can be created that will automatically format and print a sales report. I hit one key, and the entire process begins, without I having to go through all of the steps each time.

The advantages of VBA is the time saving function. I get consistent results at much greater speed than I could do myself. VBA allows me to create buttons to put in my menu bar, to execute the task. If I need to perform the task multiple times, I can set it to do so, and walk away from my computer, knowing the work is getting done. There are some disadvantages that will deter most people. For starters, I need to learn to code, to use VBA. It’s not a very intuitive program, that I can pick up over a weekend. I have to learn the various code forms, and figure out how to construct the task I want automated. They are VBA programs for Excel, which means that they are only transferable to other Excel programs. I can’t use my programs in other applications. Also, if I code wrong, there can be glitches in the automation process, and I may need to go in and troubleshoot until I finally get it correct (Deman Media, Inc., 2016).

According to Durant (2009), I have learned that in 1993, work was done in an exclusive application that didn’t have the broad reach into databases and Web sites like today. Importing CSV files was the primary way of ‘reaching’ into other data. Sharing consisted of saving a spreadsheet up to a file share. Customizing the application was primarily the task of users. Most IT departments had other things on their mind than tinkering with Office customizations. VBA gained huge popularity because of its ability to allow a non-greenscreen programmer to customize her or his application experience. A user could write a VBA ‘script’ or macro that would automate repetitive tasks and save a ton of time. Over the years, many hundreds of millions of documents have been imbued with this kind of code and saved users untold numbers of hours. Since 1993, 1997 and beyond, using VBA can still help users save time and effort by automating tasks and customizing their Microsoft Office experience. And, as the application features have evolved to adapt to new user needs has also evolved and grown. VBA has remained in step with these evolutionary changes (Durant, 2009).

Peer Question: What is the difference between Visual Basic 6.0 and VBA?

Thank you for reading!

I wish you all will have a wonderful week 1!

VBA is Visual Basic for applications. What this basically means is VBA is a programming language(feature) that is used to control the functionality of Excel or any other program that is needed and is VBA compatible. The VBA programs are as well referred to as Excel Macros, VBA Macros and Macros. (Emagnetic, 2015)

VBA is not to be confused with VB.net as many times it has been. VB.net can also be referred as VBA’s big brother. VB.net does share a lot of VBA’s attributes, but it is much more complicated and harder to master. It requires a lot of time and knowledge to become a master of VB.net. (Emagnetic, 2015)

VB is needed and is great to be used with Excel when there are impossible tasks with complex formulas. VBA can control Excel by writing and running a procedure it is referred to as macros. To be able to command Microsoft Excel proficiently by using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Microsoft’s Excel needs its operational capabilities are to be understood with its program elements. VBA assist in eliminating the need to create 1000 character mega-sized formulas. All of this helps with creating efficiency. (Emagnetic, 2015)

Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is used quite often to help with complex equations that are just too difficult to solve with just Microsoft Excel. This action alone is one of the main points why VBA is needed among others. As it assists with complex tasks, it also is more efficient and compatible with many application for quick results. Using VBA can have endless possibilities but be cautious if it is overused it can complicate your work as well. So choose wisely when to use VBA and use it as it is needed.(Chandoo, 2011)

Visual Basic for Applications is a programming featured that Microsoft designed to use with their Microsoft Office package. It has the primary application to be used with Microsoft Excel. VBA assists in Excel to create programs that are too complicated of formulas for Excel alone. Excel is a great program that helps business in organization, charts, and budgeting for example. VBA was created for one reason to be able to run automated Microsoft Excel tasks.Everything that is done and performed in Excel is faster and more efficient than manual labor.(Techwall & What is VBA?, 2016)

VBA programming has many advantages one, for example, is to the VBA command Excel will always execute the task the same way. This is one way of knowing its proficiency. This means anyone can run this task the same way. A disadvantage of VBA is you need to learn the code and its not something you can learn over a couple of days. You need to make sure your code are correct, or many glitches can come up. This can cause a lot of needed trouble shooting, and that can take much time. There are far more advantages than a disadvantage to VBA.

Peer Question

Can you think of an example in a business that VBA would be needed to be used with Excel?
