  • Investing in the health care organization’s technology and information system is very important. The IS should not be look at as a commodity but as a strategic value. The CEO and CIO should have a reporting relationship that reflect a fundamental view by executive management that the information systems function of the organization has strategic value. Unlike a commodity like electricity in a hospital the IS and technology has to be strategic because the hospital needs are constanty changing. The electricity although more of it may be used the need for it never changes. The IS and technology has to be specific to the needs of the hospital and its changes in demands. The IS can serve as a means of achieving the goals of the hospital. The adverse affect of not strategically aligning the IS and technology with the organization is that the organization will not be able to keep up with the demands of the customers. The organization could lag behind in the ongoing changes in technology and cause patients to lose their lives for miscommunication. The organization could potentially lose money.

Suppose you are the administrator at a hospital of your choosing. From the e-Activity, suggest the most important attributes of other hospital’s information systems (IS) that you would need to consider when structuring the IS system in your own hospital. Provide a rationale for your response.

When working in any heath care organization, you will find that, that organization has their own technology and information system. At any office that is acquainted with that organization, you will be able to sign on to their system and get the information that you need. Doctors who work for the organization tend to refer patients to other doctors who also work for the same organization and the same system, so it is easy to pull up patient information without having to wait on release of medical information which can take months to get. Managers are able to run the data they need, any organizational changes can be addressed once and power points or tip sheets can be found on the companies intranet for all employees to find when ever they are needed. I, for example, work for a health care organization and there are always changes being made to our systems to benefit either a certain department, link data, or to benefit everyone. My company designates virtual meeting times to fill everyone in on the changes being made, they then send us all a link to our work emails on what was shown in the virtual meeting, we are also able to get on the company intranet to use tip sheets in case something was misunderstood or forgotten. I personally think investing in any health care organizations technology and information system should always align with the overall organization’s strategic goal.

Suppose you are the administrator at a hospital of your choosing. From the e-Activity, suggest the most important attributes of other hospital’s information systems (IS) that you would need to consider when structuring the IS system in your own hospital. Provide a rationale for your response.

    1. Ensuring adequate privacy and security for personal health data
    2. Improving the population healthcare through tracking methods
    3. Improving the quality, safety, efficiency and reducing health disparities

Considering how things were back in the day with having to write things down for every patient when they came into the office and use separate rooms to file all the patients’ paperwork, at that time seemed rationale. Looking back at those times, writing every little thing down was very time consuming, here was no real privacy or security for patient information. When doctors provided patients with prescriptions, they were hard to read when now mostly all prescriptions can be electronically sent to the pharmacy of the patients’ choice. I would personally consider my three options listed above when structuring the IS system in my own hospital.
