  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Instructions:

Using the films that we have watched during the first portion of our course, write an essay discussing one or more of them by either analyzing that film through the filter of humanity versus technology, humanity versus humanity, or humanity versus other. Here are some suggestions:

  • For instance, how do the early films reflect our anxieties or benefits of technology?
  • How does Metropolis depict the difficulty of technology advancing combined with the difficulties of social class, religion, and romance?
  • Discuss the circumstances of Things to Come and how the film addresses the events of the day with ideas of where the future would lead.
  • There is much debate about whether the alien take over in Invasion of the Body Snatchers reflects the paranoia that many felt over Communism in American. Some view the film as addressing everything from the witch hunt of the congressional hearings led by Senator Joe McCarthy in his search for Communists or simply how easily people fall under the spell of consumerism—buying whatever we are told is the must have item of the day. The film is also seen as the model for the film Night of the Living Dead (1968), which many acknowledge as the father of the contemporary zombie genre.

Your essay must provide the following items:

  • You must develop a clear thesis with an essay focused on the qualities of the film of your selection, including direction, writing, acting, music, special effects or other aspects.
  • You must specifically discuss the director of the film and how he or she developed the film or how other works by the film’s director compare to your selection.
  • Whatever film you select, try to watch the film again if you can.

Remember, you must establish a clear argument with a thesis and focused main points:

Do not submit a one paragraph essay. This does not allow for your topic to develop.

Use a director’s full name when first discussing that person (Alfred Hitchcock or Spike Lee).

Never refer to the director by her or his first name because an essay is a professional document.

Write film titles using italics or underlining (Metropolis or Metropolis).

Do not use texting language (&, lol, i, etc.).

What you think is the most important part of your topic.
