Childhood obesity is an increasing issue in our country. This health concern places adolescents at risk for poor health at an early stage of their life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “for children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the prevalence of obesity is 18.5% and affects about 13.7 million children and adolescents” (Childhood, 2018, para.1). Let’s Move! is a comprehensive campaign dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity. Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, launched the campaign in 2010. The campaign provides helpful resources to parents that foster healthy choices, encourages children to eat healthily, get active, and provides various programs across the country to reach their goals (About, n.d.).

There are four Ps of a marketing campaign. They are described as product, price, place, and promotion. For the Let’s Move! campaign, a product is not sold, but there is a service for children being provided and also awareness of childhood obesity. Next is Price, the campaign calls upon local elected officials to adopt long-term approaches to address childhood obesity. The Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture direct the program. The place of the Let’s Move! campaign is nationwide, “from sea to shining sea”, to encourage children all throughout American to eat healthily and get active. For Promotion, the campaign addresses the issues of childhood obesity by utilizing social media, holding “work-outs” to bring awareness and educating children in school my utilizing MyPlate.

Let’s Move! addresses childhood obesity by educating children that physical activity is a critical part of a healthy lifestyle. The campaign encourages children to participate 60 minutes a day of playing with moderate to vigorous exercise. As stated above, the campaign provides fantastic recourses to help children in making healthy lifestyle choices. One of the resources is called Salad Bars to Schools. Let’s Move! has raised over 14 million dollars so far for salad bars to be placed in schools. The campaign has also donated 5,349 salad bars, serving over 2.6 million children. (Salad, n.d.). However, there are still 327 schools waiting for this healthy option. One way the campaign can improve for future success is by bringing awareness of donations to help achieve their goals. Another resource the campaign has created is producing a music video encouraging children to dance and move. The music video, from Beyoncé called “Move Your Body”, is full of energy and invites children to participate in physical fitness. I believe another way the campaign can improve for future success is by playing the music video on children’s TV shows. Watching Beyoncé jump in heels is encouraging enough for me to get outside and play. Imagine if children were watching their icons on TV inspiring them to get active, children around the nation would turn off the TV and become healthier!

The social marketing campaign I decided to discuss this week is the National Breast Cancer Foundation, INC. This national campaign provides education, support and free mammogram testing to woman in need. Their Hope Kits stood out to me as well, this is a product given woman undergoing treatment for breast cancer in hopes to bring comfort and encouragement to them in their time of need. There are a few different ways you can help this campaign through donation or some type or with your time. A donation of 150$ can provide a woman with mammogram, but donations in all sizes are accepted. Other ways to give is through Corporate Sponsorship which means that the company has partnered with NBCF in an effort to help with this campaign. I was unable to find a location for this campaign but because of the sponsors I believe this campaign is located all across the United States. When this campaign first began in 2011 it was promoted through a large campaign with Gannett Will Light Corporate Headquarters. Today this campaign is promoted through local broadcast stations, and websites. Two of the major websites that promote this campaign are USA Today and Nurse.com. I believe the campaign effectively communicates the risks associated with this health condition by showing real people and not actors who are currently living with this disease. I also believe that providing free mammograms to woman who would otherwise not be able to afford this also is effective because it helps more woman detect this disease earlier rather than later. I believe that this campaign could improve by possibly adding a school program that targets high school students teaching them how to check for lumps and detect early signs of breast cancer. Another way to help improve this campaign by possibly providing a way to help sponsor a woman going through breast cancer treatments whether it’s a small donation or a volunteer that provides mental support to patients during treatment to help encourage them and keep their spirits up.

The article that I found talk about American’s overall health since the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid and the growing populations. It discusses the way that the American population aging has changed over the past 35 years with the rise in chronic illnesses. This changes the leading causes for morbidity and mortality rates among the older generations. The growing need for healthcare are used to monitor the changes statistically. They use sample surveys through telephone calls, mail or even in person interviews. They use vital statistics to collect data through recent events and changes. One of the main issues that they face is financial. Making sure that the survey and data is up to date cost money in which depends on the states funding that is available. Another issues is one aspect of the privacy and confidentiality issue, however, that could have a significant impact on reduction of duplicative and overlapping reporting systems is data sharing and data linkage among government agencies (Rice, 2001). Now we had major privacy issue for the information that is documented through different systems.

Good afternoon,

I’m having a hard time deciding on which healthcare problem would like to study statistically. I keep jumping back and forth between the shortage of nursing staff and the sanitation of the clinical setting waiting area. The shortage of nursing staff would be a nationwide study where the sanitation of a clinical setting waiting room would be a much smaller scale. So my decision is to go with the smaller scale. The problem the waiting room of almost any clinic, holds patients waiting to be see by the doctor, whether well or sick they share the same space which means they are sharing bacteria. So in my study I will split the waiting room right down the middle. One side of the waiting room cleaned hourly with an antibacterial agent the other only cleaned at the end of each day. We will not disclose to the patient which side they sit on, but monitor how many of them acquire an illness within 72 hours of doctor visit. The data could be used to create policy, of hourly sanitation or more frequent, or even create a well waiting room away from sick waiting. Or maybe even larger scale with a UV wash or UV lighting in the waiting area.
