Classmate #1:

Hi class my name is Sarah. I am 29 year old from New Jersey. I am a recent first time homeowner with my boyfriend who is in law enforcement, our puppy Maggie and our three cats. This is my second year here at SNHU working towards my Bachelors of Science in Health Care Administration. I’ve been working in health care for the past 7 years. First started as a Certified Medical Assistant in family medicine and then transfer to non operative orthopedics sports medicine. I than switch to where I am now working as a spinal surgical assistant and surgical office coordinator.

The article that I have chosen from the Kaiser Family Foundation website is “Gaps in Cost Sharing Protections for COVID-19 Testing and Treatment Could Spark Public Concerns About COVID-19 Vaccine Costs”. I chose this article because COVID-19 is the most talked about topic when it comes to health care right now. This pandemic changed everything about my job and any potential career I may have in the future in health care. This article struck my interest because while working in health care at the start of the pandemic we had to learn a new set of rule and regulations when it came to what insurances will be coving during a global pandemic. For example some insurance companies were not coving virtual telemedicine visits for non participating (out of network) providers. This article was highly informative on the insurance side of the COVID-19 vaccine. Right now I feel as if most people are concerned of the vaccine is safe to get but the next question is if insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurances will be covering the cost or will there be gaps in coverage or any patient responsibility for the vaccine. I think it is important for anyone considering getting the vaccine to look into their insurance company and plan to determine their benefits on the COVID-19 vaccine before getting themselves into a financial bind they were not prepared for.

Classmate #2:

Hello Professor, and fellow classmates, my name is Ramiro and I am 33 years old. I was born and raised in small town, population of about 21,000, in West Texas. I am currently a Licensed Optician, where I do some eyeglass and contact lens sales and dispensing, but mostly I handle the the laboratory work like checking the prescriptions and insurance paperwork. I have been in the Optical field for 13 years now, but have recently got the opportunity to be on a special team of Enrollment Specialists at the corporate level and I am excited for my new journey and how it will help gain knowledge and experience towards my degree in Health and Wellness Administration with a minor in Health Information Systems. This course in Healthcare Delivery Systems will be greatly beneficial to not advancing towards my degree but it will also provide me with the necessary tools to better assist patients in my daily work as well as communicating with Health Providers in my new role at my company.

The article that I have chosen from the Kaiser Family Foundation was titled, “Health Officials Fear Pandemic Related Suicide Spike Among Native Youth”. This article begins with the story of a young Native American girl who has committed suicide after a previously failed attempt, and up until her suicide, seemed to be coping fine. Her mother and local officials, like with most Native Americans have relied on their culture for support rather than from outside entities, like the government. I was interested in this article because of the social stigma that still surrounds mental health. Also how sometimes mental health diseases are considered less serious because they are sometimes no obvious physical symptoms like that of a cancer patient. The Native American aspect also interested my because Native Reservations already struggle with high rates of substance abuse, limited healthcare access, and overcrowding in their homes. Adding a pandemic to all of this means Native Youth are affected more because recreational programs and limited counseling services are being cancelled. These things are important for healthcare because too often impoverished minority communities, like Native American Youth, are left behind due to poor internet access and underfunded government aid. Having a better understanding of Healthcare systems might allow me someday to assist with the planning of how to lower the rates of suicides in Native American Youth, and to me that would make all the difference.
